Our history

The Otago Branch of NZFGW was established in May 1921 and, through its membership of NZFGW, is affiliated to IFUW.  IFUW was established in 1919, after the end of World War 1, in the hope that by joining together educated women might help to promote international peace, co-operation and friendship.  In the intervening years, IFUW’s mission has broadened to include ideals and actions that support education and equality for women and girls, recognise and protect human rights, promote social justice, encourage lifelong education, and influence society in beneficial ways.
