Other Awards/Grants

The opportunities listed here are not dispersed from the funds of NZFGW (Otago Branch) or NZFUW (Otago Branch) Charitable Trust, but the Branch plays a part in the dispersal of the Brenda Shore Awards, administers the funds of the Marion Fyfe Prize in Zoology and the NZ Medical Women’s Association Elective Scholarship, and supports the funding of some NZFGW and IFUW awards.

Brenda Shore Awards

Brenda Shore (1922 – 1993) was educated at Epsom Girls’ Grammar School and at Otago University where she gained a M.Sc. in 1946.  She taught in the Botany Department at the University of Otago from 1945 until her retirement as Associate Professor in 1983.  She held the New Zealand Federation of University Women Fellowship for study abroad in 1951, and spent three years in Cambridge, U.K., where she gained a Ph.D. in plant anatomy.  She then returned to the University of Otago’s Botany Department.  Ann Wylie, an Otago Branch member, recalled (in 2008) Brenda’s part in keeping the Botany Department going in difficult times and her painting botanically accurate pictures in later life.

Brenda Shore Awards are given by the University of Otago on the recommendations of NZFGW (Otago Branch).  The Awards fund is in the gift of NZFGW (Otago Branch) through the bequest of Brenda Shore lodged through the University of Otago and administered by Trustees Executors.

Marion Fyfe Prize in Zoology

Marion Fyfe (1897 – 1986) taught Biology to medical students at the University of Otago.  She was a foundation member of NZFUW in 1921, and was active in encouraging and guiding NZFUW in establishing postgraduate fellowships for research, which are still important in assisting women.

The Marion Fyfe Prize in Zoology is awarded to the female student who attains the highest level of achievement in Zoology at 400-level.   Although the Otago Branch administers the funds for the Marion Fyfe Prize, it is awarded by the University of Otago.
